Abstract:

Metallic materials with tailored properties are crucially important for a variety of structural and functional applications. There is a strong need for development of new high-performance alloys but also for elaborating suitable processing routes enabling control over phase and microstructure selection, heterogeneity and structural order as well as optimization of the related physical and mechanical properties for creating suitable parts for applications. However, the details of the correlation between composition, atomic structure, local internal stresses together with structure modulation and hierarchy of the microstructure, defects and thermo-mechanical treatments employed for structure modification and their impact on deformation and failure mechanisms are still often not well understood.

This talk explores the diversity of structures and properties that can be achieved in metallic glasses, chemically complex alloys and composites considering structure changes, recovery and rejuvenation mechanisms, clustering, segregation as well as phase separation or nanocrystallization phenomena when the materials are subjected to different solidification conditions or thermomechanical treatment. The phase and structure modulation and possible structure changes will be correlated with plastic deformability and failure mechanisms, and tailoring of composition and microstructure through properly adjusted manufacturing parameters for materials design will be discussed to derive guidelines for processing and property optimization.
