Mithun Palit

Mithun completed his Bachelor of Technology in Metallurgical Engineering from Bengal Engineering College in year 2002. Subsequently he joined Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (Defence Research and Development Organisation) as a Scientist B. He joined the institute as an external Ph.D. candidate in 2006 and completed his PhD in May 2013. Currently he is a Scientist D at DMRL.

His thesis is titled "An Investigation on effect of structural and microstructural attribute on magnetostriction of Tb-Dy-Fe and Fe-Ga alloy" under the joint guidance of Prof. Chattopadhyay and Dr. S. Pandian (Magnetic Materials Group, Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory, DRDO, Hyderabad). A brief introduction of his thesis is as follows:

" Magnetostrictive materials form an important class of magnetic materials keeping in view of their potential applications as sensors and/ or actuators. Amongst several materials in this class, RFe2 type (R represents rare earths) intermetallics display maximum promise owing to giant magnetostriction exhibited by them. In this thesis, one such mixed rare earth compound (Tb,Dy)Fe2 has been chosen for investigations. Several aspects such as phase equilibria, evolution of texture and microstructure of directionally solidified alloys have been
studied in this thesis, where existing literature cannot provide a clear insight. Finally, a correlation between texture and microstructure with magnetostriction has been brought out to understand the process-structure-property relationship of such practically important intermetallic compound. Apart from the investigation on the well known magnetostrictive material (Tb,Dy)Fe2, attempts have been made to understand the role of microstructure, especially the ordered phases on the magnetostriction of an emerging magnetostrictive material Fe-Ga. The description of the experimental work carried out and the analysis of data have been presented in the subsequent chapters of this thesis with a brief review of existing literature at the beginning. "

He was awarded the Young Metallurgist of the Year Award by Ministry of Steel, Government of India for the year 2010 and the DRDO Young Scientist Award in 2009 by DRDO, Ministry of Defence, Government of India. He was also awarded the IIM Student Prize for the year 2003 by Indian Institute of Metals along with the Indranil Award in year 2003 by Mining, Geological and Metallurgical Society of India. He also a recipient of the University Medal for the year 2002 awarded by the Bengal Engineering College (Deemed University) for securing 1st rank in BE (Metallurgy).
