Suman Sarkar

Suman completed his Bachelor of Technology in Ceramic Technology from Calcutta University in 2004. Subsequently he was with TATA Ceramics for a short period followed by a stint at Development Alternatives Ltd. from 2004 to 2005. He was also a Research Intern at the Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute, Kolkata (CGCRI). He completed his M.Sc.(Engg.) from the department in 2009 followed by which he joined the institute for a Ph.D.

Currently he is working on Cu based alloy design and its phase transformation related studies . He is also interested in Phase Field Modelling. He is working under the joint guidance of Prof. Chattopadhyay and Prof. Chandan Srivastava (Department of Materials Engineering, Indian Institute of Science). A short discription of his work is provided below:

"Generally Cu based alloys are extensively used for high temperature applications due to copper's high heat conductivity. The present effort focuses on imparting high strength in the alloy. Strength will be achieved due to the ordering of nano-structured precipitates in the copper matrix. This order-disorder phase transformation will be investigated through advanced microscopic techniques. The thermodynamics and kinetics will be investigated via phase field modelling."

Suman is also an active participant of the institute theatre club. He is passionate about acting and theatre.
