The 8th International Conference on Quasicrystals will be held at the campus of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India during 8th to 13th September, 2002. The conference will be organised in India on behalf of the International Advisory Committee of Quasicrystals with the Indian Institute of Science as the host. In the last two decades the scientists have met on the occasion of the conference at various places like Les Houches (1986), Beijing (1987), Vista-Hermosa (1989), St. Louis (1992), Avignon (1995), Tokyo (1997) and Stuttgart (1999). ICQ8 will be held in Bangalore, the garden city and the science capital of India. Numerous possibilities for accommodation will be provided. A half-day sightseeing excursion will be organised for the participants. Tours to famous places of Karnataka will be arranged as post-conference events.
The field of quasicrystals is widening in several directions: Structural aspects engage mathematicians and crystallographers. Unusual physical properties are a challenge to experimental, theoretical, and computational physicists. The nuances of the phase diagrams fascinate the metallurgists.Eighth in the series of this international events, ICQ8 will focus on the latest developments in the field of physics, processing and applications of quasicrystals. Sample preparation and single crystal growth have been improved, and new quasicrystalline alloys have been detected. Material scientists have discovered more and more possible applications. The conference will provide a forum on all aspects of quasicrystals and foster the exchange of ideas, techniques, and experiments. The conference language will be in English. All the original contributions in the form of plenary, oral and poster presentation will be arranged. The contributions are expected to be oriented but not limited to the recent results in traditional and novel subjects of quasicrystals.
First Circular | August 31, 2001 |
Abstract Submission | May 31, 2002 |
Advance Registration | May 31, 2002 |
Intimation of Acceptance of Abstract | May 31, 2002 |
Second Circular | March 31, 2002 |
Final Programme and Circular | July 31, 2002 |
Dead line for the full paper will be announced later. We request all the contributors to communicate the tentative title and the abstract of their papers as early as possible. We would like to keep them on the web for the benefit of the quasicrystal community.
The logo of the conference represents the harmonic blend of the golden heritage of the Indian Institute of Science with the field of technical excellence:"Quasicrystals".The tower in the logo is the tower of the main administrative building of the institute. The diffraction pattern in the logo represents a decagonal quasicrystalline phase, which can be related to the icosahedral phase by twinning along the five fold axis. The decagonal phase was discovered in this institute in 1985. This logo is designed by Alok Singh and Eric A. Lord.
The Conference will be held in the National Science Seminar Complex, a part of the wooded campus of the Indian Institute of Science. All the sessions will be held here. Adequate international connection through fax/phone and e-mail will be provided to the delegates.
The host, Indian Institute of Science, is a leader in post-graduate education in India and is internationally known for its scientific and engineering research and development. The community consisting of faculty and graduate students (majority of whom pursue research degrees ) provides an ambience of high intelluctual stimulus and is perfect backdrop for a fruitful interaction.

Among many hotels in Bangalore, we have chosen the following three as
"Conference Hotels", because of their proximity to IISc and the quality of their service. Transport to and from the Conference venue will be arranged for those
staying at these hotels.
We encourage you to choose one of these hotels for your stay, and make
use of the reduced tariffs offered by them to the Conference delegates.
We will be happy to assist you in making a reservation in the hotel of
your choice; in fact, we urge you to do your booking through us by
filling in the accommodation form available online. A hard copy of the form, duly filled in, may also be sent by fax or regular mail to the Conference Secretariat.
