MT 202: Metallurgical Thermodynamics
Principal text for the course
-
C.H.P. Lupis, Chemical thermodynamics of materials Elsevier Science,
1982.
Other texts
In addition, I list below a few other texts at different levels. Note
that quite a few of them are on physical chemistry; this should not be
surprising, since the treatment of thermodynamics in this subject is
the closest to that in our course. I strongly urge you to consult some of
these other sources also, so that you
benefit from a diversity of viewpoints.
In particular, check out the inexpensive Indian
editions of the (undergraduate level) texts by Atkins and DePaula, and by
Laidler and Meiser; both the books are very good.
- Kenneth G. Denbigh, Principles of chemical equilibrium (Fourth
edition), Cambridge University Press, 1981.
- Arthur W. Adamson and Alice P. Gast,
Physical chemistry of surfaces
(Sixth edition), John Wiley, 1997.

thermostatistics (Second edition), John Wiley, 1985.
- David L. Goodstein, States of matter , Dover, 1985.
- Federick Reif, Fundamentals of statistical and thermal physics ,
McGraw Hill, 1965.
- Irving M. Klotz and Robert M. Rosenberg,
Chemical thermodynamics: Basic theory and methods,
Benjamin/Cummings, 1986.
- David R. Gaskell, Introduction to the thermodynamics of materials
(Fourth edition), Taylor and Francis, 2003.
- Peter W. Atkins and Julio DePaula, Physical chemistry (Seventh
edition), Oxford University Press, 2001.
