Our main focus is to study diffusion in solids with an emphasis on interdiffusion and the Kirkendall effect. The knowledge on diffusion of elements is essential to understand most of the physical and many mechanical properties. In many applications, such as electronic packaging (flip chip bonding, wire bonding, Cu interconnects) and bond coats on superalloys in jet engine applications, the performance or life of the structure depends on the diffusion controlled growth of the phases. In fact, bond coats a! re prepared by diffusion controlled process and then the life of the bond coat depends on the diffusion of elements. Many products, such as, A15 intermetallic superconductors, diffusion bond of dissimilar materials are produced by diffusion.

  • 1. During Ph.D. under the guidance of Prof. Frans J.J. van Loo and Dr. A.A. Kodentsov (Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands), he was part of one of the most important discoveries of recent times on previously unknown phenomenon related to the Kirkendall effect that further led to the development of many new models by different groups and finer understanding of the diffusion mechanism in the solid state.
  • 2. His group at IISc developed the concept of the physico-chemical model that relates the relative diffusion rates of the componnets with microstructural evolution in an interdiffusion zone. This facilitates the analysis of diffusion prcess based on microstructural evolution in material systems of practical applications such as multicomponent inhomogeneius material systems, thin films and the diffusion process under the influence of external forces, which was not possible earlier.
  • 3. He has established a possible corrlelation between the estimated diffuion coefficients with the presence of defects on differenr sublattices in intermetallic compounds, which are otherwise difficult to calculate or almost impossible to estimate following the experimental techniques.
  • 4. Very recently, his group has established the concept of the psuedo-binary approach leading to the estimation of useful data in multicomponent diffusion for understanding the complicated diffusion process in an inhomogeneous material system, which was not possible earlier.
